Dental Crowns

Over time, teeth may weaken, making them prone to issues like decay, cracks, or discoloration. In such cases, a dental crown can be a great solution to restore both the appearance and functionality of the tooth.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a cap that is placed over a tooth to cover and protect it, resembling the shape and size of a natural tooth. Not only does it improve the aesthetics of the tooth, but it also provides strength and stability for chewing and biting.

Dental crowns can be made from various materials, such as porcelain, metal, or a combination of both, to suit the specific needs and preferences of each individual.

At Smiles of Westminster, we understand the importance of a healthy and beautiful smile, which is why we ensure that our crowns are crafted with precision and allow perfect color matching to your natural teeth.

Why might I need crowns?

  • To protect a weak tooth from breaking
  • To prevent a tooth from breaking after a root canal filling
  • To protect a large filling
  • To hold a cracked tooth together
  • To cover and support a damaged or decayed tooth
  • To cover a severely discolored tooth
  • To restore a broken or severely worn tooth

How do you prepare and fit a dental crown?

The first step to our dental crown treatment is a comprehensive examination to determine if a dental crown is indeed the best treatment option for your specific case.

Fitting a crown takes two visits: At the first visit, Dr. Crow will prepare the tooth that will receive the crown by removing a layer of enamel to make room for the crown. This is usually done under local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. While your permanent crown is being made, Dr. Crow will fit a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth until your next appointment. At your second visit, Dr. Crow will check the fit and color of your permanent crown and make any necessary adjustments to ensure the crown feels comfortable and looks natural. Once you are happy with the crown and how it looks, it will be cemented firmly into place.

Maintaining good oral hygiene practices and attending regular dental check-ups are crucial for keeping your crown in excellent condition. Dr. Crow will provide you with care instructions to ensure the longevity of your new crown.
